A metal oxide surge arrester (also called a metal oxide varistor or MOV arrester) is a protection device installed on distribution lines and cable systems to limit overvoltage caused by lightning strikes and switching surges. It provides a low-impedance path to ground when voltage exceeds the arrester’s rated threshold, then returns to high impedance once the surge has passed. Metal oxide arresters have replaced older silicon carbide types due to superior energy handling, lower protective level, and maintenance-free operation.
Distribution arresters are designed for pole-top installation on MV overhead distribution lines, typically rated for 3kV to 36kV with nominal discharge current of 5kA or 10kA. Station class arresters are designed for substation equipment protection — transformers, switchgear, and cable termination points — with higher energy handling capacity and typically 10kA or 20kA nominal discharge current ratings. The selection depends on the equipment to be protected and the expected lightning and switching surge exposure at the installation site.

The arrester’s rated voltage must be equal to or greater than the maximum phase-to-ground voltage at the installation point — typically 1.0 to 1.25 times the nominal system voltage. For example, a 10kV distribution system typically requires a 10kV or 12kV rated arrester. Always confirm the system voltage, neutral earthing arrangement (solidly earthed, impedance earthed, or isolated neutral), and maximum temporary overvoltage (TOV) when specifying.
Polymer (silicone rubber) housing is now standard for most new installations due to its superior hydrophobicity, resistance to vandalism, lighter weight, and better performance in polluted environments. Porcelain housing is still available for projects where specifications require it. Specify your preference when requesting a quote.
