A metal oxide surge arrester (also called a metal oxide varistor or MOV arrester) is a protection device installed on distribution lines and cable systems to limit overvoltage caused by lightning strikes and switching surges. It provides a low-impedance path to ground when voltage exceeds the arrester’s rated threshold, then returns to high impedance once the surge has passed.
