A metal oxide surge arrester (also called a metal oxide varistor or MOV arrester) is a protection device installed on distribution lines and cable systems to limit overvoltage caused by lightning strikes and switching surges. It provides a low-impedance path to ground when voltage exceeds the arrester’s rated threshold, then returns to high impedance once the surge has passed. Metal oxide arresters have replaced older silicon carbide types due to superior energy handling, lower protective level, and maintenance-free operation.
Distribution arresters are designed for pole-top installation on MV overhead distribution lines, typically rated for 3kV to 36kV with nominal discharge current of 5kA or 10kA.
